Homeschooling On The Rise

“While data from the NHES cannot explain why homeschooling was more prevalent in 2003 than in 1999, it can provide insight into why parents homeschooled their children in 2003,” the report’s conclusion read.

For 2003, two answers accounted for the majority of responses: concern about environment at other schools (31 percent) and to provide religious or moral instruction (30 percent). Nearly one in six (16 percent) cited dissatisfaction with academic instruction at other schools. Fourteen percent cited a child’s physical or mental issues (7 percent) or other special needs (7 percent).

Other responses, including family unity and individualized teaching, accounted for 9 percent of the responses.

My child doesn't have mental or physical issues, but I'm homeschooling for many of those reasons. I really don't like survey's and poll's that ask me to pinpoint why I'm homeschooling. I'm homeschooling because I love it, and it's working for our family. Every day that my son learns something that I would have missed had he been in school, I find one more reason why we're doing what we're doing.

I think this country is becoming frustrated with the current system who, while trying to leave no one behind, end up leaving most of them lacking. Parents are turning to homeschooling in desperation, and finding that it's a safe haven. They can do it. Their children will learn. And their families will thrive.
