February 28, 2004

Today was a nice day. I was able to sleep a lot with Bridget, and the kids were really good. We went to Walmart this afternoon and bought some things we needed with some money that my sister-in-law sent us. It was so nice to actually go in and be able to buy things without worrying about how to pay for it.

Piper is still screaming. I've been going to lots of websites looking for advice on proper discipline of a toddler. Reagan was so easy. All you had to do was say his name in a stern voice and he'd immediately discontinue whatever behavior I found irksome. Piper is a more complicated child. Maybe it has to do with being a girl. In any case, there doesn't seem to be any advice dealing with our situation directly. Her screaming is very often in short bursts as opposed to tantrums. By the time I've reminded her to use her indoor voice, she's already stopped. I'd just like her not to start!

I did find one really great website on attachment parenting for Christian moms.  It's a really great website. I think I'm going to have to have Dominic read through a few discipline articles as it might help if we are both on the same page. In his family spanking was used, and in my family too. While we have spanked, I would really prefer not to. I want my kids to respect me as opposed to fear me. Especially in a toddler, I don't think spanking is productive.

In any case I love that there is a school of thought that encourages gentle while firm parenting that focuses on the bond between parent and child. That's the kind of mom I've always wanted to be. Sometimes I think I'm more of an accidental mom, in that I react to situations as opposed to having a plan of action.

Well, I've got to get the kids ready for bed.
