One new trend in baby shoes are Robeez, soft leather shoes. I love them. They're fantastic. Not only are they incredibly cute, but they are a shoe that your baby can wear for a long time (they're sized in 6 month increments) and because of elastic, they can wear them early. Also, with primary colors and basic designs, they can be worn with a lot.
But for those of us on a budget, we'd like any way to get something for less. If you're interested in this kind of shoe for your baby. Target has virtually identical shoes made with real leather, that can be washed in the washing machine (occasionally) for about half the price.
I do love these shoes. I generally have trouble getting baby shoes on a newborn.
